Looking for cameraman

There are are thousands of shots to be taken; who is looking for cameraman? I must have asked this a thousand times. Well what is the answer? NGO’s who want to document their valuable work. Businesses that want to showcase their products and services. Film makers who are looking for cameraman that will shoot interviews for a documentary and develop B-roll (cutaways that run during interview to entice support the conversation).

The other day a Legal NGO dealing with the rehousing of city squatters was looking for cameraman and I took the job. It was a building on Jeppe street which faced the Carlton centre. I had to interview the squatters and see the conditions of their existance in the 6 story building. I took a deep breath and entered a cave in the city. the cavern was littered with old cloths that seemed to cover the excrement and waste. To witness such a disgusting place was something I could have done without; it was occupied by the most desperate of humans. I scrambled around in the filth to get to the make shift homes built out of rubbish in a previously gutted building. The place had no stairs, no water, no electricity and no sewage system. It was like seeing people who live among the rats and feeces right in this city. What had happened was a relocation programme setup by the city muncipality to ind decent accomodation for these desperados. If hell were represented on earth then surely this was how it looked and smelled.  I heard a conversation from below someone was looking for cameraman, it was my client the legal NGO representative. Once I found her we could set about talking to the occupants. Prostitutes, thieves, chancers, riff-raff, illegal immigrants and desperate others.

It is difficult to make these films about poverty; especially when one realises its outcome only benefits a few.

The work paid but the trauma still haunts me when I think back to the situation I witnesssed. This was no war zone yet it seemed these people were living worse off, some even with children. They were subject to crimes un imaginable squashed into a place that only rats could endure. Well looking for cameraman, I’m up for it!
