I remember the first tv camera I operated; it was a shoulder mounted camera with the recorder attached via a cable. This was a less than ideal situation; another thing I remember was it was a tube tv camera which could not be pointed at a direct light source or it would cause a tube burn mark which would render the tv camera useless.

It was an exciting time for me none the less; I was excited to be learning the art of film making and this tv camera was my solution. Atkinson Audio Visual of Cape Town were my teachers and mentors. These patient folks sent us through their course; I learned to shoot a tv camera and edit on a linear edit suite. Every shot had to be in order from the beginning. It was so difficult and slow. Upon completion I had a 5 minute video to show. It was a pollution information movie. We had scripted, shot edited and screened the movie

in 2 weeks. The tv camera was not for movies and used mostly in news gathering. Today the film camera has been replaced by the tv camera.

I am now shooting on a tv camera; much smaller lighter and easier to operate than ever.

I love to create hand held shots that are alive and floating as if breathing.

The tv camera gave me the edge to learning and perfecting this technique. It is as though you must be as steady and smooth as possible but remain flexible and organic...

How awesome to be a tv cameraman; its fabulous to be responsible for taking the shots at a live event. I have stood shaking as I filmed the President walking by or making a speech.

Worried something would go wrong making sure it didn’t. Me and my tv camera… tv camera
